Cisco: Network admins need UX love too

All too often, applications for engineers tend to throw screenfuls of data at their users, with the excuse that engineers certainly know  how to filter through it. Cisco's network tool - the Identity Systems Engine (ISE) was no different. Its reporting function was a favorite tool of network admins to monitor network usage, but was hamstrung by a tabular UI that allowed neither easy discoverability nor intuitive manipulation.

Final:  Report Selector

After some inspiration from Donald Norman's 'Living with Complexity', I met with network admins, mapped the pain points in their work flows and designed a querying experience that made manipulating data less like a divination and more of a methodical inquiry. Network admins reported being pleased with the first phase of the

new design.
